“To see Scorpions on a floating stage on the Weser, in their first year with James Kottak on drums.”
Context
On August 24, 1996, a stretch of the Weser River becomes a stage in Bremerhaven. Scorpions plays on a pontoon, separated from the shore by about 80 meters of water. The harbor landscape welcomes a band in transition: Herman Rarebell had left, and James Kottak takes over the drums on the Pure Instinct tour.
Klaus Meine leads a program that places four tracks from the new album among established hits. Wild Child and Stone in My Shoe share space with Blackout and Big City Nights. Kottak gets his solo before Still Loving You. On the shore, hundreds of lit sparklers accompany the home stretch, closed by Rock You Like a Hurricane.
Radio Bremen records the night for television, also preserving the unusual setting, with boats gathered around the stage. The tour moves on to other continents, and Kottak stays in the lineup. Bremerhaven remains a portrait of this passage: the familiar songs cross the water while the group presents its new chapter.
- Four tracks from Pure Instinct meet the hits of the previous decades.
