“To see Sepultura at Pinkpop on the Roots tour, in Max Cavalera's last year with the band.”
Context
On May 27, 1996, Sepultura reaches the Landgraaf field with Roots still fresh. The album had deepened the turn toward Brazilian rhythms and instruments that began on Chaos A.D. At Pinkpop, that shift takes the stage with Max Cavalera, Andreas Kisser, Paulo Jr. and Igor Cavalera.
Spit, Breed Apart, Dusted and Straighthate put the new material at the center of the set. Before Attitude, drums and berimbau share a brief improvisation. Territory and Refuse/Resist keep Chaos A.D. in play, while two medleys bring different eras together: Arise into Dead Embryonic Cells, Ratamahatta into Kaiowas. Orgasmatron closes the encore with Motörhead.
The night belongs to Max's last year fronting Sepultura. The Roots tour still continues through Europe, but the split comes at the end of 1996, after the concert at Brixton Academy. The Pinkpop recording remains an audiovisual document of this lineup: four musicians going through a change of language before the breakup.
- A brief drums-and-berimbau improvisation comes before Attitude.
