“To see Savatage take The Wake of Magellan to an overcrowded Live Music Hall, with VIVA's cameras rolling.”
Context
On November 29, 1997, the Live Music Hall in Cologne welcomes Savatage with tickets sold beyond capacity. The band is crossing Europe with The Wake of Magellan, released that year. VIVA brings cameras to the venue and records a lineup that had been stable since the Dead Winter Dead era.
Zak Stevens takes lead vocals, while Jon Oliva handles keyboards. Chris Caffery and Al Pitrelli split the guitars, with Johnny Lee Middleton on bass and Jeff Plate on drums. Welcome opens the six-song selection; Turns to Me and Morning Sun bring the new album close to Chance, Jesus Saves and Handful of Rain.
Television turns the night into a partial document: only excerpts of the show make the broadcast. The half-hour selection keeps three songs from the newly released album and three from earlier eras. What is preserved here is not the length of the concert, but a precise meeting between the new repertoire and the lineup taking it on the road.
