“For Queen's second night at the first Rock in Rio, closing its South American run with Freddie Mercury.”
Context
At the first edition of Rock in Rio, Queen returns to Brazil four years after the Morumbi shows. The band's second performance at the festival comes during The Works tour. The City of Rock gives another dimension to the relationship already established with the Brazilian audience, now also mediated by television.
Tear It Up and Tie Your Mother Down open the live block. The set moves through the recent hits and the medleys from the first albums. Rock in Rio Blues stretches the vocal improvisation, while Love of My Life hands the singing back to the crowd. The recording alternates available footage with passages preserved only on audio.
Parts of the two nights feed the Live in Rio release and other broadcasts. Rock in Rio Blues also finds a path of its own on later releases. The long reconstruction keeps more of the program than the short edits, but carries cuts and different sources. It is also the end of Queen's South American performances with Freddie Mercury.
