Context
Five years after John Bonham's death and the end of the band, the three survivors share a stage again. On July 13, 1985, the meeting takes place at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The cause is Live Aid, organized by Bob Geldof to fight famine in Africa.
Plant takes the microphone, Page the guitar and Jones alternates between bass and keyboard. Behind them, Phil Collins and Tony Thompson share the drums. Rock and Roll opens the run, followed by Whole Lotta Love. On Stairway to Heaven, Paul Martinez takes over bass while Jones moves to keyboard for the close.
The reunion does not turn into a regular return of the band. The performance draws criticism and leaves the musicians themselves dissatisfied; they later block its inclusion on the official Live Aid DVD. The recording remains tied to the television broadcast: a brief, exposed return that the group prefers not to fold into the event's commemorative release.
- Stairway to Heaven brings in Paul Martinez on bass and John Paul Jones on keyboard.
