“To see Queen take over the first Rock in Rio, during The Works tour.”
Context
At two in the morning, the opening night of the first Rock in Rio is still not over. Queen take the stage at the Cidade do Rock already on January 12, 1985, although the ticket says the night before. The band arrive on The Works tour and return a week later.
Freddie Mercury shares the stage with Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor, backed by Spike Edney on keyboards and guitar. The edit moves from Tie Your Mother Down to fragments of Seven Seas of Rhye, Keep Yourself Alive and Liar. On Love of My Life, the crowd singing along takes center stage.
The two late nights meet in Live in Rio, released on VHS in May of that year. Now I'm Here, Love of My Life and I Want to Break Free come from the second performance; most of the selection belongs to the first. The film compresses the shows but preserves the meeting between Queen and the Brazilian crowd.
- Love of My Life turns the audience into a collective choir.
