Context
In September 1986, Johnny Cash arrives at the Forum in Inglewood at a moment of change. His long run with Columbia comes to an end that year, while his career continues on the road. On the California stage, continuity lies in the band and in the presence of June Carter Cash and the Carter Family.
Cash sings and plays acoustic guitar in front of a lineup that brings together guitars, bass, drums, piano and horns. June shares the vocals on Jackson and The Wreck of the Old '97. The Carter Family also takes the stage. Between the musical blocks, an interview makes room for the spoken word and changes the pace of the recording.
The next stage takes Cash to Mercury, before his partnership with Rick Rubin in the 1990s. This performance remains a television document of a phase less remembered than the prison records or the American Recordings cycle. Preserved on tape, it keeps side by side the singer in concert and the man answering questions.
