“To see Queen back at Wembley a year after Live Aid, on the last tour with Freddie Mercury.”
Context
A year earlier, on the same turf, Queen had made Live Aid its own with about twenty minutes on stage. In July 1986, the band returns to Wembley as the headliner, with INXS, Status Quo and The Alarm opening. There are two nights at the stadium, and the Saturday show, July 12, is the one that becomes a film.
A Kind of Magic had reached stores forty days earlier, born from the songs written for Highlander, and lends four tracks to the set. Freddie Mercury leads the stadium like someone conducting a crowd: Ay-Oh becomes a call-and-response game, the acoustic block lowers the temperature and the rock and roll covers heat up the road to Bohemian Rhapsody.
No one there knew it, but this would be Queen's last tour with Freddie. Less than a month later, at Knebworth, he takes the stage with the band for the last time. The Wembley show comes out on VHS in 1990, becomes a double album in 1992 and gets the complete DVD in 2003.
- The acoustic block makes room for Love of My Life and rock and roll covers.
- Friends Will Be Friends separates We Will Rock You from We Are the Champions in the final encore.
