Context
In the spring of 1978, the Grand Ole Opry House hosts a gathering that goes beyond the borders of country. Johnny Cash brings together June Carter Cash, Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter and Ray Charles for a CBS special. Family also takes the stage: Rosanne Cash joins the reunion led by her father.
Cash shares There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang with Jennings and meets Charles on Busted. The duets place partners from different paths inside the same program. June and Jessi are part of the cast, while Rosanne takes a step of her own: her appearance marks her debut on American national television, still early in her career.
CBS airs the special on May 7, 1978. In that same period, the Cash and Jennings partnership also reaches the record I Would Like to See You Again, which includes There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang. The recording preserves this crossing of studio collaboration, family reunion and television.
- Cash shares Busted with Ray Charles and There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang with Waylon Jennings.
