Context
On June 26, 1994, Johnny Cash steps onto a Pyramid Stage rebuilt in a hurry after a fire. American Recordings had arrived two months earlier, produced by Rick Rubin. In Pilton, that return to simplicity finds a place between Jackson Browne and James on the Sunday bill.
Cash opens with Folsom Prison Blues, backed by Bob Wootton, Dave Roe, W. S. Holland and John Carter Cash. Then he sends the band off for the acoustic segment. Delia's Gone and The Beast in Me bring the recent record to the stage. June Carter comes on to share Jackson and If I Were a Carpenter.
The performance is preserved in Channel 4's television coverage, which that year widens the festival's reach. The edit mixes songs and interviews, without reproducing the whole concert. In March 1995, American Recordings wins the Grammy for best contemporary folk album: the comeback also earns institutional recognition.
- June Carter Cash shares vocals on Jackson and If I Were a Carpenter.
