Context
On June 9, 1994, just over six weeks separate Johnny Cash from the release of American Recordings. At the Manhattan Center, in New York, he finds a point of contact between two phases: the hits that sustain his career and the repertoire he has just recorded with Rick Rubin.
The night starts with Folsom Prison Blues and passes through Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down, Ring of Fire and I Walk the Line. Then Cash makes room for Delia's Gone, The Beast in Me and Drive On. The set places his own compositions beside songs by Nick Lowe, Loudon Wainwright III and Glenn Danzig.
The performance goes to television through VH1 and remains a document of that start of a cycle. In March 1995, American Recordings wins the Grammy for best contemporary folk album. The New York recording holds a moment before the award: the new choices already share the stage with the past, without erasing it.
