Context
On July 4, 1987, the tribute to Vietnam veterans finds John Fogerty facing a past he avoided on stage. Disputes with his former label had kept the Creedence songs out of his solo tours. At the Capital Centre in Landover, that block begins to give way.
Fogerty sings Born on the Bayou and moves on through Down on the Corner, Who'll Stop the Rain and Up Around the Bend. The gesture has a concrete recipient: the veterans honored that night. Fortunate Son puts the inequality behind the war back at the center of the set, before the collective close with Proud Mary.
HBO broadcasts the event and preserves an important shift in Fogerty's relationship with his own songs. The rapprochement had already shown signs months earlier, at a jam with Bob Dylan and George Harrison at the Palomino. Here, though, it takes on the dimension of a benefit concert: the songs once again serve those who carried them.
