The Carter Family began in 1927, in Maces Spring, Virginia, with A. P. Carter, Sara Carter and Maybelle Carter. The recordings made at the Bristol sessions that same year included “The Poor Orphan Child” and “Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow”; the group also popularized songs like “Keep on the Sunny Side” and “Can the Circle Be Unbroken”. The original lineup broke up in 1943, and Maybelle carried on with her daughters.
