Context
On March 20, 1966, British television still broadcasts the Palladium in black and white. Roy Orbison arrives at the London theater for an edition that also experiments with color pictures. His national tour, announced for March 25, is five days away.
On stage, Orbison opens with Oh, Pretty Woman and moves to In Dreams. Twinkle Toes, his new single, comes third, before the closing It's Over. Jimmy Tarbuck hosts the edition, which also features The Seekers and Julie Rogers. These are four songs within a variety show, not a long recital.
After the Palladium, the schedule moves through British theaters with the Walker Brothers and Lulu. The TV recording remains a concentrated pass through that moment, between established hits and a new release being promoted. The color recording survives, and the complete program returns to British television in 2020, preserving an image the original broadcast did not deliver.
