Context
Six days after playing in Iceland, Led Zeppelin arrives at the Bath and West Showground with something new to open the show. On June 28, 1970, Immigrant Song debuts in front of the Shepton Mallet crowd. The band is moving between the second album and the songs that will form the third.
On stage, Robert Plant shares the space with Jimmy Page's guitar, John Paul Jones's bass and organ and John Bonham's drums. That's the Way opens an acoustic front, with acoustic guitar and mandolin. Moby Dick makes room for the drummer; the encores flow into a rock and roll medley.
Peter Whitehead and Ernie Vincze's cameras also gather waiting, conversations and faces away from the stage. The project is never finished, and the film stock prepared for daylight loses definition when night falls. Decades later, the material resurfaces in viewing copies. What survives does not rebuild the whole concert: it preserves a change of phase in fragments.
- That's the Way debuts with Jimmy Page on acoustic guitar and John Paul Jones on mandolin.
