Context
In December 2000, Dolly Parton steps onto the Austin City Limits stage for the first time. After decades of career, the debut comes during a phase of closeness to bluegrass and Appalachian music. Little Sparrow has yet to reach stores, but its songs already fill the program.
Dolly sings the title track, goes through Collective Soul's Shine and makes room for Mountain Angel. Mandolin, banjo, fiddle, dobro and acoustic guitars make up the backing. Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You link this phase to her classics. In another segment, Nickel Creek plays four songs, from Ode to a Butterfly to The Fox.
Little Sparrow arrives in January 2001 and continues Dolly's exploration of her musical roots. The meeting with Nickel Creek also continues: she invites the group to back her at that year's Grammys. Preserved as a season 26 episode, the recording brings a veteran songwriter together with a generation that widens bluegrass's reach.
- Chris Thile plays in Dolly's backing band and in Nickel Creek's own segment.
