Context
Four careers share the same stage in Uniondale on March 14, 1990. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson arrive at the Nassau Coliseum with Highwayman 2 just released. The gathering does not erase their individual paths: it puts that past into circulation within a shared band.
Highwayman opens the sung sequence. Jennings brings Good Hearted Woman; Cash runs through Ring of Fire and Folsom Prison Blues; Kristofferson gathers his own songs; Nelson leads City of New Orleans and Always on My Mind. Behind the four, nine musicians carry the night, among guitars, keyboards, steel guitar and Mickey Raphael's harmonica.
The concert gets a new life in 2016, when Columbia/Legacy presents the complete version as Live – American Outlaws. The original film reels supply the material for DVD and Blu-ray, along with CDs. The film preserves something bigger than the sum of the hits: four repertoires live side by side without having to become a single voice.
- Nine musicians back the quartet, including Reggie Young, Mickey Raphael and members of the Memphis Boys.
