Context
On June 5, 1995, Sinéad O'Connor takes Pinkpop's south stage, in Landgraaf, with a recent record and no reliance on her biggest hit. Universal Mother had arrived the previous September. Now eight of its songs go into a set that leaves Nothing Compares 2 U out.
The Emperor's New Clothes leads the way, but the heart of the night is the new material. Famine, Red Football and All Babies share space with Thank You for Hearing Me and the version of All Apologies, by Nirvana. Jon Klein takes the guitar, Claire Kenny plays bass and John Reynolds holds down the drums.
Fire on Babylon closes the main set; Mandinka is saved for the encore and reconnects the show to the first album. In the following weeks, the schedule takes in Glastonbury and Roskilde before Lollapalooza, which Sinéad ends up leaving during her pregnancy. Preserved in the festival's audiovisual archive, the show keeps Universal Mother at the center of the story.
- Mandinka closes the encore after a show without Nothing Compares 2 U.
