Context
On May 23, 1994, the Levellers arrive in Landgraaf carrying a contrast. The third album had reached number two on the British charts, but it was born from the strain of two years on the road. At Pinkpop, that material shares space with the songs that had established the band on Levelling the Land.
100 Years of Solitude opens the set, followed by Sell Out and Broken Circles. Mark Chadwick and Simon Friend take vocals and guitars, with Jon Sevink on violin, Jeremy Cunningham on bass and Charlie Heather on drums. The sequence runs through One Way and Battle of the Beanfield, takes in The Clash's English Civil War and ends with Liberty Song.
Shortly after, the band headlines Glastonbury, raising the scale of that summer. P.C. Keen already appears here before landing on Zeitgeist, released the following year. Preserved in a festival recording, the Pinkpop set holds that transition: the third album still recent and the next record already taking its place on stage.
