“To catch the Pumpkins at the turn of 1991, before Siamese Dream changed the band's scale.”
Context
The Smashing Pumpkins close out 1991 at the Metro, in Chicago. The New Year's Eve night belongs to the Gish era, when the band is still making its way between the club circuit and the prominence that would come later.
The file keeps the December 31 show. Near the end, Billy Corgan smashes a guitar; the episode also comes up in discussions about the instruments the band used in that period. The scene ties the show to a concrete object in the Pumpkins' history.
This Metro show predates the 1993 performances and the 2000 farewell at the same venue. Keeping these dates apart preserves the meaning of the recording: a band in its first album cycle, still ringing in the new year in its hometown.
