“To see the original lineup in the club that serves as Morphine's base, two years before the first album.”
Context
On May 22, 1990, Morphine is still two years away from its first album. The address is the Upstairs at The Middle East in Cambridge, where the trio sets up its base. Before international touring, the story runs through this Central Square club.
Mark Sandman takes vocals and two-string bass; Dana Colley fills the space of the horns, and Jerome Deupree plays drums. There is no guitarist and no keyboardist in the lineup. The stage brings together the three musicians who started the group, with an instrumentation that goes against the excess they saw in the rock of the time.
Good arrives in 1992 on Accurate/Distortion and is reissued by Rykodisc the following year, when Cure for Pain widens the band's reach. The Cambridge recording remains a document of the stage before the records. Its forty minutes keep Morphine tied to the place where it begins building its path.
