Context
Four thousand people fill a hall used to ballroom dancing to see a Manchester band on the rise. It is August 12, 1989, and the Stone Roses' debut reached stores only three months earlier. At Blackpool's Empress Ballroom, that recent material already carries a large-scale show.
Ian Brown leads the way with I Wanna Be Adored, while John Squire brings the wah-wah to Elephant Stone. Mani holds the bass, Reni plays drums and sings backing vocals. Waterfall and Made of Stone carry the night until I Am the Resurrection opens up into the funk-swinging instrumental section that ends the show, with no encore.
The performance gets a second life in November 1991, when it reaches VHS as Blackpool Live, directed by Geoff Wonfor. The release gathers eleven songs and leaves out Standing Here and Sally Cinnamon, also played that night. The film preserves a precise snapshot: the debut still fresh, in front of a hall already won over.
- I Am the Resurrection closes the night with a long instrumental passage, with no encore.
