Context
In December 1990, Morphine has no album out yet, but already brings to the clubs the songs that will make up its debut. The trio started playing together the year before. At the Middle East in Cambridge, this story gets a recording with Mark Sandman, Dana Colley and Jerome Deupree.
Sandman sings and plays one-string bass with a slide; Colley takes the baritone saxophone, and Deupree the drums. Good opens the run, followed by The Other Side and Claire. Jim Fitting adds harmonica to I Know You (Part I), bringing the stage close to his partnership with Sandman in Treat Her Right.
The next step leads to Good, released in 1992 and reissued by Rykodisc in 1993. Several songs from this night find their place on record there, among them The Saddest Song and Have a Lucky Day. The footage preserves a stage before that circulation: the original lineup working its repertoire on the club circuit.
- Jim Fitting joins in on harmonica for I Know You (Part I).
