“To see McCartney's ACL Fest debut, in the first weeks of the Freshen Up tour.”
Context
On October 5, 2018, Zilker Park welcomes Paul McCartney for the first time at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Freshen Up has just started in Canada, and Egypt Station reaches the stage less than a month after its release. The meeting puts new material in front of decades of collective memory.
A Hard Day's Night opens the way for Hi, Hi, Hi and Can't Buy Me Love. McCartney crosses the Beatles, Wings and his solo career without dropping the recent tracks: Come On to Me and Fuh You make the set. Let Me Roll It flows into Foxy Lady; in the encore, Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight and The End form the close.
A week later, McCartney returns to the festival for the second performance. The tour runs into 2019, taking Egypt Station to other continents. The Austin recording circulates as the festival's Red Bull TV stream, preserving this meeting between a new release and a retrospective. The park debut stays tied to the start of a new journey, not a farewell.
- Let Me Roll It works in Foxy Lady before the return to the Beatles repertoire.
