“To see McCartney reunite with Rio after 21 years, on the first of two nights at the Engenhão.”
Context
Twenty-one years separate the Maracanã visit from this return to Rio. On May 22, 2011, Paul McCartney finds the Engenhão packed for the first of two nights. The Up and Coming Tour had already passed through São Paulo and Porto Alegre the year before; now it is Rio's turn.
Hello, Goodbye opens the way for Jet. Alongside Rusty Anderson, Brian Ray, Paul Wickens and Abe Laboriel Jr., McCartney alternates the Beatles, Wings and his solo career. Here Today honors Lennon; Something remembers Harrison. During Hey Jude, signs reading Na fill the floor and make the singer put his hands on his head.
The farewell still runs through two encores and ends in the Sgt. Pepper's reprise and The End. The next day, McCartney returns to the same stadium. The Sunday performance also reaches Latin America through Terra's stream: the Rio reunion gains an audience beyond the limits of the Engenhão.
- Hey Jude gets a visual response from the crowd, with signs spread across the floor.
