Context
Even before soundcheck, fans gather outside NPR headquarters. Harry Styles is in Washington with no show announced, and the visit raises suspicions. On February 25, 2020, the scale of a pop star meets the cramped space of a working office.
Behind Bob Boilen's desk, Styles jokes about feeling like he is interrupting the workday. The band that backs him on tour fills the space with guitars, bass, drums and keyboards. Cherry opens the session; between the four songs from Fine Line, he tells songwriting stories and spins in his seat.
The session reaches the public in March, when NPR suspends new in-person recordings and also starts presenting the Tiny Desk from home. The meeting stays tied to the office and the colleagues gathered in front of the band. Fine Line, released in December, gets here a portrait focused on four songs and the conversations between them.
- Watermelon Sugar and Adore You come with stories about how they were written.
