Context
In July 2008, Shea Stadium hosts its last shows before demolition. Billy Joel takes the field for two nights, in front of 110,000 people in total. The farewell carries a history that begins with the Beatles in 1965 and now meets a songwriter tied to the streets of New York.
Joel opens with Prelude/Angry Young Man and shares New York State of Mind with Tony Bennett. Garth Brooks comes in on Shameless; John Mayer joins This Is the Time. Between Captain Jack and Piano Man, the set spans decades. Paul McCartney takes two Beatles songs and turns the link to the stadium into a physical presence.
The stadium disappears in 2009, but the two nights find different homes on screen: the documentary The Last Play at Shea and the concert film. In March 2011, the program arrives on DVD, Blu-ray and CD. The release preserves the farewell without pretending it is a single night.
- Tony Bennett shares New York State of Mind; Garth Brooks and John Mayer also join.
