Context
Nine years after its last visit to Japan, Duran Duran returns to Tokyo on September 20, 2017. The Budokan ends an even longer wait: 14 years away from that stage. The Paper Gods tour reaches its final stretch, with Chic and Nile Rodgers opening.
Simon Le Bon walks on in white pants and opens the show with Paper Gods. The meeting with Rodgers gets a pause for Happy Birthday to You before Notorious and Pressure Off. Later, Le Bon calls for an end to nuclear war and leads Ordinary World; Sunrise incorporates New Moon on Monday.
The encore brings The Universe Alone close to Save a Prayer, under the glow of cell phones, before the closing Rio. Two days later, the band heads to Osaka. The Tokyo night is broadcast by WOWOW and leaves another trace: a selection of the songs reaches the vinyl Budokan in April 2018.
- Nile Rodgers links Notorious to Pressure Off after receiving Happy Birthday to You.
- Ordinary World follows a plea from Simon Le Bon against nuclear war.
