Context
On June 25, 1997, Central Park hosts a guitarless trio on the Texaco New York Jazz Festival program. Morphine arrives at SummerStage three months after Like Swimming, its first album for DreamWorks. The label change expands the structure around the band but keeps bass, saxophone and drums at the center.
Mark Sandman takes vocals and two-string slide bass, with Dana Colley on saxophone and Billy Conway on drums. Like Swimming opens the set. Mona's Sister brings poetry between the songs, Colley gets a solo of his own and Slow Numbers appears in an early instrumental version. Cure for Pain and Buena sit alongside nine tracks from the recent album.
In the following weeks, the road takes Morphine onto the H.O.R.D.E. circuit, extending a summer of shows in the United States. The Central Park recording preserves one stage of that run, with the new album already part of the stage show. Between the poem and Early to Bed, which closes the run, the trio of Sandman, Colley and Conway is documented in 1997.
- Slow Numbers appears in an early instrumental version, between Murder for the Money and Swing It Low.
