Context
On March 27, 1999, Morphine arrives at the Bowery Ballroom with one concrete difference: there are two drummers in the lineup. Jerome Deupree is back playing alongside Billy Conway. After Like Swimming, the group is working on the sessions that will lead to The Night, still unreleased that spring.
On stage, Mark Sandman takes vocals and two-string slide bass, while Dana Colley fills the space of the saxophones. Have a Lucky Day opens the musical run. Rope on Fire and Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer sit alongside Thursday and Cure for Pain, bringing the next album close to the earlier ones.
A little more than three months later, Sandman dies during a performance in Palestrina, Italy. The Night arrives in February 2000, with the work finished by his bandmates. The Bowery footage preserves this four-musician setup before the break, with the new songs already sharing space with the established repertoire.
