Context
At noon on a Monday, Eels takes Pinkpop in the middle of its European run for Beautiful Freak. It is May 19, 1997, in Landgraaf. The debut album had taken Novocaine for the Soul and Susan's House up the charts; now its songs reach Megaland with a lineup of just three musicians.
E handles vocals, guitar and electric piano, backed by Tommy Walter's bass and Butch Norton's drums. Not Ready Yet opens the set. Living Life, by Daniel Johnston, breaks up the run of originals, while My Beloved Monster, Susan's House and Novocaine for the Soul concentrate the first record's material.
After Landgraaf, the schedule heads to the United States and the Lollapalooza circuit, before another European swing. The recording remains in the festival archive, tied to that edition's television coverage. Between the opener and A Most Unpleasant Man, it preserves Eels still close to the first album, before the shift in horizon of Electro-Shock Blues.
- A Most Unpleasant Man closes the set, reaching back to E's solo career.
