Context
On June 3, 2016, the domes of the Eden Project serve as the backdrop for the close of BBC Music Day. Duran Duran arrives in Cornwall with the Paper Gods tour and the role of the event's ambassador. The night brings the recent record's campaign close to a musical celebration spread across the UK.
Paper Gods opens the set before The Wild Boys and Hungry Like the Wolf. Laura Mvula joins the band on Notorious, while Planet Earth meets Space Oddity in a tribute to David Bowie. In the encore, purple lighting accompanies Save a Prayer, dedicated to Prince and threaded with snippets of Little Red Corvette. Rio closes the performance.
The concert airs live on BBC Radio 2, and a selection reaches BBC One on Sunday, June 5. The edit preserves three tracks from Paper Gods among hits from other decades. Later, the band officially makes the Planet Earth performance available for download: a fragment of the night gets a life of its own, with footage provided by the BBC.
- Laura Mvula shares Notorious with the band.
- Bowie and Prince are honored on Planet Earth and Save a Prayer.
