Context
Thirty-three years separate Doe Maar from its last visit to Pinkpop. In 1983, part of the crowd greeted the band with fruit thrown at the stage. Now, on June 11, 2016, the return to Landgraaf trades that resistance for a packed field, ahead of the night's closing set by Rammstein.
Henny Vrienten jokes about the absence of a shower of apples. Alongside Ernst Jansz, he leads songs the crowd follows down to the details of the vocals and horns. The backing section wears white. Joost Belinfante comes on to sing Nederwiet, while Doris Day gets people dancing far from the stage.
Three days later, the reunion reaches the Ziggo Dome, in Amsterdam, for the first of three shows. At Pinkpop, the selection focuses on twelve songs and leaves out that season's new material. The recording preserves a specific reunion: the band returns to the festival that witnessed both its rise and the backlash against its success.
