Context
Five musicians in one room replace the scale of festivals with a challenge that leaves nowhere to hide. After taking back the vocals on Suicide Society, Jeff Waters brings Annihilator to an acoustic format in his own studio, in Dunrobin, Ottawa. The inspiration came from Van Halen's filmed sessions, but the idea demands concentration, not just a relaxed mood.
Between late May and early June 2016, Waters gathers Aaron Homma, Rich Hinks, Pat Robillard and Marc LaFrance. The quintet plays together and records each song in a single take, with no later fixes. Sounds Good to Me opens the session; Stonewall appears in the home stretch, before Crystal Ann and Phoenix Rising.
In January 2017, the sessions come out on DVD and Blu-ray as part of Triple Threat. The package places this meeting alongside the electric show at Bang Your Head and a documentary. The contrast gives the record its purpose: preserving a collective experience in which Waters makes room for other musicians inside his own songs.
