Context
On August 5, 2017, the Bullhead City Circus tent hosts Primal Fear at the 28th edition of Wacken. The band is nearing twenty years together and arrives with Rulebreaker still its most recent studio work. The meeting puts that era before a crowd that sings from the opening song.
Final Embrace leads the way, and In Metal We Trust comes in with a fountain of fire. Ralf Scheepers leads the vocals as the set alternates recent material with songs from other eras. Nuclear Fire gets rising flames; Angels of Mercy and The End Is Near reinforce Rulebreaker's presence before the close with Chainbreaker and Metal Is Forever.
After that summer, the band enters the studio in November to work on Apocalypse, which arrives in August 2018. The Wacken show remains as the festival's audiovisual record, with nine songs in just over forty minutes. It is a concentrated slice between two albums, without turning the stage time into a sprawling retrospective.
