Context
On August 4, 2016, Wacken hosts the last date of the year on The Book of Souls World Tour. Bruce Dickinson had already been through cancer treatment before returning to the road. The German stop closes this leg, but not the tour, which continues in 2017.
The band opens with If Eternity Should Fail and Speed of Light. Six songs from The Book of Souls take up space between Children of the Damned, The Trooper and Powerslave. Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers share the guitars; Steve Harris and Nicko McBrain complete the instrumental core. Wasted Years closes the encore, followed by early birthday wishes for Dickinson.
The live stream takes the night beyond the festival. The following year, The Number of the Beast finds a place on The Book of Souls: Live Chapter, a compilation of shows from different countries released as an album and digital film. Wacken supplies one piece of that worldwide portrait, while the full recording preserves the specific 2016 run.
- This night's The Number of the Beast is part of The Book of Souls: Live Chapter.
