Why watch

“For the return of Temper after sixteen years and the meeting with Chino Moreno on the Rio night.”

Context

Ten years after Hypnotize, System of a Down reaches Rock in Rio with no new studio album to present. The night of September 24, 2015, opens its Latin American leg at the City of Rock. The set has to carry the reunion on what the band has already built, but it also makes room for an old surprise.

I-E-A-I-A-I-O starts a sequence that moves through Suite-Pee, Attack and Prison Song. Temper reappears for the first time since 1999. Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian trade vocals, and the final stretch changes lineup for a few minutes: Chino Moreno, of Deftones, joins Toxicity before Sugar closes the show.

The meeting with Chino belongs specifically to this performance. At the next show, in São Paulo, the band keeps most of the set, adds ATWA and plays without the guest. The Rio recording preserves both the strength of the catalog and the detour that keeps this night from being just another repeat.
