Context
On February 22, 1995, Sublime is still the opening act at Palookaville in Santa Cruz. The headliner is Sprung Monkey, and the night is part of the Bud Surf Tour Bash. Robbin' the Hood was already out; the trio is in a phase of heavy touring.
Bradley Nowell takes vocals and guitar, with Eric Wilson on bass and Bud Gaugh on drums. STP and Saw Red open the way. Scarlet Begonias meets Ninja Dub, while House of Suffering and Hope bring other bands' punk to the stage. Garden Grove already appears before the future self-titled album.
The camera is there because of Sprung Monkey: Robert W., hired to film the headliner, also records the opener. That decision preserves a night before the national breakthrough of the 1996 album. The tape circulates among collectors, sometimes with a wrong June date, and keeps the trio in that transitional space.
- Garden Grove appears on stage more than a year before the release of Sublime.
