Context
On the afternoon of May 28, 2012, Pinkpop's main stage hosts just two musicians. Seasick Steve arrives in Landgraaf after winning a place at festivals and clubs across the Netherlands. You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks is his most recent record.
Alongside drummer Dan Magnusson, Steve plays his custom guitars and weaves the blues with stories and jokes. He calls a young woman from the crowd for a serenade and plays Down on the Farm live for the first time. The scale is a festival's; the resources are still those of a duo.
After the set, Steve still spends hours signing autographs and joins other artists at the festival itself. Down on the Farm finds a place on Hubcap Music the following year. The show is part of Pinkpop's TV and online coverage, preserving the contrast between the enormous field and a lineup pared down to the essentials.
