Context
On July 24, 1999, a former air force base in Rome hosts Rage Against the Machine between Limp Bizkit and Metallica. Evil Empire is still the most recent studio album. The Battle of Los Angeles only arrives in November, but Born of a Broken Man already has a place on stage.
Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk open with No Shelter. The quartet runs through the first two albums and includes Bruce Springsteen's The Ghost of Tom Joad. At the close, Killing in the Name accompanies the burning of an American flag: the protest takes on a literal image.
The performance follows two paths of memory: the broadcast footage preserves the whole, while Bulls on Parade appears on the double compilation Woodstock 99, released by Epic in October. Shortly after, The Battle of Los Angeles opens another chapter. Here, the band remains in the gap between its established repertoire and the next album.
- Killing in the Name closes the show with the burning of an American flag.
