Context
At 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, Pinkpop sets aside the Brightlands Stage for a trio that brings the blues onto the dance floor. MY BABY arrives in Landgraaf after releasing Prehistoric Rhythm, its third album, and preparing a bigger stage production that balances improvisation, light and projections.
Cato van Dijck handles vocals and guitar, Daniel Johnston works the other guitar and Joost van Dijck holds down the drums. The performance mixes roots, blues and funk, while the visuals follow the music. The crowd's movement is part of an approach that seeks to turn the show into a collective celebration, not just a replay of the record.
The story continues with MOUNAIKI ~ By the Bright of Night, in 2018, and a live album, in 2019. The Pinkpop footage preserves an earlier stage: the meeting between the language of Prehistoric Rhythm and a major Dutch festival. What remains on record is the trio at the moment it expands its production without giving up its lean lineup.
