Pete Seeger was born in New York in 1919 and brought audiences closer to traditional songs and to a repertoire tied to social movements. In 1948, he helped form the quartet The Weavers, whose recording of “Goodnight, Irene” topped the charts in 1950.
The political persecution of the era hit the group, and Seeger left the lineup in 1958. He went on to a solo career, recorded the We Shall Overcome concert at Carnegie Hall in 1963 and spread songs such as “If I Had a Hammer” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”.
