Context
In Melbourne, Ringo Starr is already back on drums. Tonsillitis had kept him out of the start of the world tour, when Jimmie Nicol took his place. Now, on June 17, 1964, the Beatles close three nights at Festival Hall, with two shows a night. Channel 9 prepares the TV recording.
In the night's second show, the quartet opens with I Saw Her Standing There and moves through ten songs. All My Loving and She Loves You share space with covers of Chuck Berry and Little Richard. During Long Tall Sally, Brent McAuslan breaks through security and shakes Lennon's hand.
The performance reaches Australian television on July 1, in the special sponsored by Shell. The edit trims the set but preserves a document of the Beatles' only tour of the country. Film prints and a preliminary videotape edit keep different parts of that night in circulation.
- Long Tall Sally ends with a fan invading the stage and reaching John Lennon.
