a-ha turned Scandinavian melancholy into pop on a worldwide scale. Born in Oslo and breaking out in 1985 with a single that seemed designed for the MTV era, the trio soon showed there was more to it than an eternal chorus.

From the synthetic sheen of the debut to the darker, more adult pop of the early 1990s, and after the hiatus and the 21st-century return, the band reappeared less as nostalgia than as elegant survival, always between melodic drive and a kind of inner chill.
