“To see the original lineup of the Devin Townsend Band together in the studio session released with Synchestra.”
Context
The heat enters the story before the first song. At Greenhouse Studios, in Vancouver, a hot summer day meets the film lighting and turns the room into a stifling space. That is where Devin Townsend gathers the band assembled for his solo work, with two guitarists, bass, drums and keyboards.
Townsend sings and plays alongside Brian Waddell, Mike Young, Ryan Van Poederooyen and Dave Young. The performance happens live, with most of the material captured in one take. Truth and Regulator open the musical journey; Storm, Earth Day and Deadhead carry the session to the passage from Away into Deep Peace.
The session gets the name Safe Zone and reaches the public on DVD, in the special edition of Synchestra, in January 2006. Marcus Rogers directs and edits the footage; Shaun Thingvold records and mixes the audio. The release preserves this lineup in the studio, gathered to play, with no need for a festival stage.

Trivia
The film lighting makes the summer heat inside the studio even worse.
Most of the session is recorded in a single take, with the musicians playing together live.
Marcus Rogers lays Apple Visualizer imagery generated from the music over the footage.
