Context
Once More 'Round the Sun is two weeks away from stores when Mastodon takes the Pinkpop stage on June 9, 2014. In Landgraaf, the band makes its second festival appearance. High Road and Chimes at Midnight are already out as singles and now meet the earlier material.
Troy Sanders sings Divinations in place of Brent Hinds. Alongside Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor, the two move through songs from Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye and The Hunter. Blasteroid comes with different lyrics; at the close, The Sparrow makes room for an extended, improvised guitar solo.
On June 24, the sixth album is released on Reprise and reaches number six on the American chart. The performance is part of 3voor12 and NPO Cultura's Pinkpop coverage. Years later, the professional footage returns to the festival's public archive, preserving the quartet in the gap between an established catalog and the next record.
- Troy Sanders takes over Divinations, and The Sparrow ends with an extended, improvised guitar solo.
