“To see Devin Townsend return to Wacken for the anniversary edition, between Epicloud and the arrival of Z².”
Context
Under the sun on Wacken's final day, Devin Townsend trades metal's solemnity for jokes and invitations to come closer. It is August 2, 2014, the festival's anniversary edition. Epicloud is still the Project's most recent studio album, and Ziltoid's return on Z² is yet to come.
Seventh Wave opens the show, followed by War and By Your Command. Townsend talks with the crowd, spots a Ziltoid puppet and turns the gaps between songs into part of the show. The sixth song gets a circle pit; Grace brings the audience together in a group hug. The heaviness shares space with an openly affectionate spirit.
Grace seems to close the set, but there is still time left. The band huddles to pick one last song and adds Bad Devil. In October, Z² opens another chapter for the Project. The festival broadcast preserves this meeting before the change: a repertoire that spans the different names of his career without separating the musician from his audience.
- Grace brings the crowd together in a group hug before the extra finale with Bad Devil.
