Context
On May 31, 2004, Muse returns to Landgraaf to close Pinkpop. The trio had already played the festival in 2000 and 2002, but now arrives with Absolution, its first UK number one. The scale changes: Bellamy, Wolstenholme and Howard take the closing headliner slot.
Hysteria opens the performance, and New Born follows close behind. Bellamy alternates guitar and piano; Citizen Erased flows into an instrumental passage of Take a Bow. Space Dementia, Ruled by Secrecy and Sunburn form a run at the piano. In the encore, Apocalypse Please and Blackout come before Stockholm Syndrome, stretched out with riffs from Execution Commentary and Psycho.
In June, the journey takes the trio to the headliner slot at Glastonbury, a performance that becomes the basis of the Absolution Tour DVD, released in 2005. Pinkpop takes another path: the footage circulates in television and radio broadcasts, while four tracks are released on the Dutch single of Sing for Absolution.
- Citizen Erased folds in Take a Bow, while Stockholm Syndrome ends with riffs from Execution Commentary and Psycho.
