Context
On August 17, 2017, Summer Breeze celebrates twenty years in Dinkelsbühl. The Devin Townsend Project arrives with Transcendence, released the year before, and sets aside an hour for nine songs. Anneke van Giersbergen joins the show, which takes place in the band's last year of activity before the hiatus announced in 2018.
Rejoice clears the way for Stormbending and Failure. Devin handles vocals and guitar, backed by Dave Young, Brian Waddell, Mike St-Jean and Ryan Van Poederooyen. Anneke comes in on Supercrush and returns for Kingdom, Grace and Higher. Those four appearances run through the second half of the show, up to the closer, a track from Transcendence.
Months later, Townsend announces the Project's hiatus and turns his work toward other paths. The German show remains on record through the Rockpalast cameras, which cover Summer Breeze for the first time that year. The meeting with Anneke thus earns a concrete place in the audiovisual memory of the group's final phase.
- Anneke joins Supercrush, Kingdom, Grace and Higher.
