Context
Six years after their 2007 meeting, Roger Hodgson shares the jazzopen stage with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker once again. It is July 6, 2013, and the festival is celebrating its twentieth edition. In the courtyard of the Neues Schloss, the Breakfast in America Tour takes on a different scale: electric band and orchestra fill the same space.
Hodgson sits at the piano while Bernd Ruf conducts the symphonic forces and signs the arrangements. The challenge is to make room inside the already crowded structures of the Supertramp songs. The strings add a discreet layer; in Even in the Quietest Moments, the contrast comes from the singer himself, alone with a twelve-string acoustic guitar.
The night's story continues on television. SWR records the concert, and Hodgson's official archive later announces the broadcast of part of the performance in Germany. The meeting stands as a document of a specific choice on that tour: expanding the band with an orchestra without abandoning the songs that hold up its identity.
